Birthday Boys!

This post is a bit late - but it's the thought that counts, better late than never, and any number of other platitudes :).

The 23rd of July, we hosted a birthday party, for our own children this time :).  Liam turned 7 on the 24th, and Ewan was 1 on the 26th.  Liam and I put together a scavenger hunt, running all over the farm.  It was the end of the really hot stretch that week, and the house was getting into the mid-80's by evening, so we set everything up in the barn, and it turned out great.  The only wall on the barn is the west one, so it blocked the sun, and we had a nice breeze.  I made a frog cake for Liam - red velvet to look like guts :) - and then a small batch of tadpole cupcakes for Ewan.  (Pictures are in the Family photo gallery). They were pretty cute - although the guests were pretty much Liam's friends, and several asked why the candles said "17" (one 1 and one 7).  I had to remind them that Liam wasn't the only birthday boy.  We made 2 kinds of ice cream the day before, and I can't decide which was my favorite.  The first was goat cheese-honey-blackberry with sheep milk, and the second was coconut-lime-mango, with mostly coconut milk and a bit of sheep milk.  I used regular (organic evaporated cane) sugar in the mango so that Ewan could actually eat one of his birthday ice creams, and I'm glad.  I think honey would have been a little too strong for the delicate flavors in that one.  I used chunks of fresh mango since the Piggly Wiggly has had them for 2/$1 for a while now (and more about that in my next post!)

Overall, we were very pleased - I finally had a real birthday party (sorry Malachi!) and it was relaxed, simple, and just a good time - what every party should be :)  Poor Malachi, though is still figuring out that he didn't have a birthday.  The next morning he grinned at me and chirped "now I'm 4 years old!"  I keep explaining that he and I will have a party together later this fall, but he still feels pretty left out.  I'd better make his party a good one...

birthdays!

HOw wonderful! I didn't realize the red velvet was for the purpose of imitating guts for the frog. Too funny! And I wondered how Malachi would feel. These concepts of time are pretty tricky.

Frog Guts Indeed!

Yep, I gave him the choice of green inside, or red and he chose red as guts :). Definitely a boy, as confusing as the long hair might be, one just needs to have a quick chat to realize...
And yes, I hadn't thought about how Malachi would feel left out! I worry about either Liam or Ewan feeling usurped by the other having almost the same birthday, but never realized Malachi would be the odd man out. You just can't win...
