Gains and Loss

This past week has, yet again, been one of joy and sadness.  I'll start with the sad - Monday morning we found our last cria of the year, Hank, dead in the pasture.  We are baffled as to the cause.  It was around 8* out, but alpacas are very cold-hardy animals, and he had his mama to snuggle with so I don't think it was the cold.  After I sheared him (in the living room, as I said it was 8* outside!) he didn't look excessively thin - pacas are always pretty lean creatures, and he was still nursing.

Well, there are only 5 days left in the year - Merry Christmas, by the way! :)  I really hope we are done with the medical drama of this summer and fall, so I wanted to give a year-end update.

When I started this blog, I wanted it to be an unbiased, accurate look at a small farm, a peering-through-the-window into the realities and nitty-gritty of homesteading life.  I wanted to talk about everything - the ups and downs, the whys and why-nots - rather than just the highlights, or quickly glossing over the more unpleasant subjects.  In that vein...

I unfortunately have to report more losses on the farm.  We no longer have Barra or even more sadly, little Willie, with us.

I don't know about y'all, but here at Solace Farm, medical situations only seem to happen at the most inopportune times.  Yesterday - Saturday, of course - we had 2!  And they are hopefully the last in a long string of them this whole summer.

I've finally had a chance to do some spinning, and it's been wonderful.  It's such a relaxing pastime, so contemplative, almost meditative, soothing...  Wait, I'm thinking of someone else - this is how I spin:

It's not like this all the time, of course - he originally was bawling facedown on my lap, but then his hair accidentally gets spun in the yarn :)

July? More Like February!

We are having an excessively wet and cool July so far.  Since the last few days of June, in fact, it's been in the 70's and even 60's and raining - very much like late winter, rather than mid-summer.  We have gotten sweaters out of the attic!  I'm not sure exactly how much rainfall we've gotten, but at least 6-8" in the last 1.5 weeks.  There's been the obvious good effects of a well-watered garden and just more pleasant days of cool temps - but there's been several downsides as well.
