Birthday Boys!

This post is a bit late - but it's the thought that counts, better late than never, and any number of other platitudes :).

The Ebb and Flow of Life

So many aspects of farm life are all about new beginnings, and creation - yet death and endings are an inseparable part of that.  I've had several conversations with Liam about the yin and yang of life (usually centered around the fact that you can't just read all day, there's work to be done so that we all have food, clean clothes, and a happy family!).

We're Still Here!

I  definitely set a record that time, for length of time without a sign of life on a blog - but we're all still here, chugging along, life's just been in overdrive for a while!

My last post was early November, so a quick roundup of happenings since:

News Roundup

Well, I did it again, it;s been a month and more since I posted.  It turns out a new baby, starting homeschool, and all the regular farm business don't allow much time for anything else, especially something as "frivolous" as writing!  So - Ewan's nursing, looks to be in it for the long haul, so I'll give this a shot...

I'll try to sum up the last month in one post.  I'd like to say I'll come back soon and expound on something or another, but to be honest, I doubt that, so I'll do what I can now.

Babies!

So we have 2 more babies at Solace Farm, as of Tuesday.  To start with, Annie had a beautiful little white alpaca boy already out at 6 am as usual.  And just like little Tammy last year, he's got two blue eyes, so there's a 90% chance he's deaf like she was.  We'll have to watch him and see for sure, but logically we should assume he is.  We also need to weigh him, now and at least once a week for a while.

Visitors

I didn't realize how long it had been since I posted - 2 weeks!  To get it out of the way right now, no I haven't had the baby yet, I've just been horribly unmotivated  - I'll certainly announce the birth here when it does happen.

Last weekend, we had some very special company.  Our WWOOFer from 2 years ago, Benjamin, came back with his family on a visit from Germany!  We have kept in touch, but hadn't seen him since, or met his parents and brother, so that was a wonderful visit.

What a Day!

in

Well, yesterday was an interesting one! It started out with making a cake - we always make one on June 29, since that is Eowyn's birthday, our daughter that was still-born in 2009.  Liam suggested carrot cake, which paired well with all the carrots I had in the fridge, and I substituted fresh goat cheese for the cream cheese in the topping.  Delicious!

Gains and Loss

This past week has, yet again, been one of joy and sadness.  I'll start with the sad - Monday morning we found our last cria of the year, Hank, dead in the pasture.  We are baffled as to the cause.  It was around 8* out, but alpacas are very cold-hardy animals, and he had his mama to snuggle with so I don't think it was the cold.  After I sheared him (in the living room, as I said it was 8* outside!) he didn't look excessively thin - pacas are always pretty lean creatures, and he was still nursing.

Expansion

We have exciting (though daunting for us) news here at Solace Farm - our house addition is finally underway!  There have been numerous delays, the norm for the construction business I know, but since we're only hiring the foundation dug and built (cinder-block) and then we're doing the rest ourselves, every month it got pushed back was extra-frustrating.

I'm Still Here!

Well, so much for trying to post 1-2 times a week!  My excuse this time is that, while I've been busy as usual, it wasn't farm stuff much, so I didn't have farm blog material - or time to write it.  I've been going to the market, a board meeting, driving to Pennsylvania and back, and basically taking a breather before the garden produce starts pouring in.  Here's a quick review of the last couple of weeks...
