Our Highland herd currently consists of our "new" bull Hamish (RIP Fergus, our first bull), 9 mature cows, several steers and heifers between 1 & 2 years old, and 2 calves so far this summer, with hopefully 7 more. These are a primitive, slow-maturing breed, not reaching butchering or calving age until about 3 years old. We think their other attributes (calving ease, hardiness, thriftiness, highest quality meat) more than make it worth the wait!
