Alpaca Fleece Suri - Brown, Black, White or Cream Suri Alpaca Fiber, Prime Cut and Well-Skirted Second Cuts
Full Suri alpaca fiber in 3 different colors, black, white/cream and reddish-brown. I have both first and second cuts in varying amounts, depending on the color:
Solomon, red-brown:
multiple second cuts
Trace, white:
multiple first cuts
multiple second cuts
Coal Porter, black:
12 oz second cut (as of 9-16-24)
First cuts are skirted as “usual” - I remove seconds and VM, and length will be whatever that particular fleece is, often 4” or so - it will vary a bit but generally not more than an inch or so variation, or I will skirt it out. Second cuts will be skirted similarly but I will include anything over 2.5” in length. Fleece from the prime/barrel/first cut is typically seen as the best quality. For Suri especially though, a lot of the "second" cut is quite nice. This may have some coarser fiber, comparatively, but for most uses besides the finest spinning, it should be quite acceptable, and is often largely indistinguishable from the first cut, especially on a young fleece.
Please let me know in advance if you're interested in more than a pound, so that I have time to skirt it - it takes longer to prep Suri for sale than it does Huacaya, so I may need a few days advance notice! I also have several Huacaya-Suri cross fleeces, that are just lovely, they have an almost invisible but distinct difference in body from full Suri, but are still very low crimp so quite silky, just fluffier! - I'm happy to send a small sample along with a purchase, on request.
Suri fleece is very different from the more standard Huacaya, with no crimp it is much more like very fine hair than “wool”. Because of this, it does not shrink, and makes a smooth, lustrous yarn very similar to silk. It is more of a challenge for hand spinners, but loves to be spun fine for lace and even cobweb, and can also be blended with other fibers including Huacaya alpaca and sheep wool to give it more body, or silk for enhanced sleekness and luster. This makes a yarn with weight to it, giving wonderful drape to garments - perfect for scarves and shawls.
Suri fleece does not come in a “blanket” but rather in locks - the lack of crimp means it does not hold together in one large unit, instead it is a heap of separate locks. Rather than skirting in the traditional method, you simply go through the fleece a handful at a time, checking for suitability - length, texture, etc. Suri fleece is cleaner than much Huacaya fiber since the VM isn’t trapped in a fluffy web, but rather falls out from between the locks, but it is a much more tedious process!
